Books I Recommend

I have been doing a ton of reading lately. And I have read so many fantastic books. I thought I would put them all in one place so I could share them with others. I read a lot of health, wellness, and personal development books. Here are some great reads to check out:

Life Goals and Personal Development

the book the great work of your lifeThe Great Work of Your Life: A Guide for the Journey to Your True Calling has an interesting premise – that every one of us has a calling.  The author uses stories of the Bhagavad Gita, stories of people both famous and every day, and weaves them together showing how different people have figured out their own life’s path.

I liked it a lot. In fact, it was part of what has inspired me to look at my own life and try to figure out where my own calling lies. It’s helping me define my own goals. It’s one of those books that you should read more than once. I borrowed a copy from a friend, then turned around and bought my own copy. After all, I see myself going back to it at least once a year. The story that affected me the most this year was that of Robert Frost, who built his life around his poetry. The way he did it resonated deeply with me.

Read this book if:

You are trying to figure out your direction in life. If you’ve ever said to yourself, “it’s just a job, right?” you need to check this book out.


I’ve just started reading Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful LifeThe book Designing Your Life, How to Build a Well Lived Joyful LifeThis was recommended to me by a friend who knows I am looking to make some life changes. It’s quite good so far. It’s about using the principles of design to figure out what you want in life. I am just a few chapters in, but so far I am really impressed.

Note: This one has exercises in it that they ask you to do. And to make this work, you are going to actually have to do them. So, this isn’t a sit-down and read it straight through kind of book. Honestly, sometimes I find that frustrating. I just want to jump in and read. However, I am trying to take me time with this one and go through all the exercises as they lay them out.

Read this book if: 

You still say to yourself, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” If you are looking for practical hands-on exercises to help you figure out how to change your life.


Genetics, Health, and Wellness

The book the Body Keeps The ScoreThe Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma totally blew me away. I starting reading it through the advice of a friend. I had mentioned to her that I have a theory: all our old muscle knots start with some kind of stress. And then, much like a grain of sand in an oyster, layers, and layers are laid on over time. The day I talked to her, I had just had dry needling done. It had rebooted some of those muscles and unknitted some of those old knots. And that was a very emotional process. It opened up more than just a muscle knot.

The Body Keeps the Score isn’t really about that, but it is about how mental trauma can affect our bodies and our brains – right down to the cellular level. It is also about how different therapies can be very effective in healing that trauma. It discusses therapies that go beyond the “pill for an ill” methodology that seems so common today.

Read this book if:

You have dealt with trauma or have loved ones that have dealt with it, and are curious if there are other ways of dealing with it outside of medication. If you feel like there is more to trauma than what you have been told, you are right.


I read another wonderful book I wanted to share with you: The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health, and Disease. If you are interested in how we humans got to be the way we are, I would pick this book up.The cover art of the book Story of the Human Body It’s incredible. The first half of the book goes through how humans went from being just another type of chimp in the jungle to walking upright and becoming hunter-gatherers. But then it gets into the cultural evolution that has taken place since we began farming and went through the Industrial Revolution.

Read this book if:

You are curious as to why more people seem to be getting cancer, having cardiac problems, and getting diabetes. If you are interested in how and why the human body works the way it does, and how many of today’s physical problems are the result of our cultural environment, you have to read this book.
