Hot Flashes Don’t Burn Calories

Here’s another fun thing that is happening. I am going through menopause.

I am 46. I’ll be 47 in September, but many of the ladies in my family go early. Overall I don’t mind, but hot flashes during a summer where we have had multiple weeks with 92 degree weather have not been fun. I live in Michigan, I am not used this kind of weather! I went onto Etsy today and ordered some fans to carry with me. Every time a flash hits, I breakout into a massive sweat. Fun.

If you’ve never had hot flashes, this is what they feel like: it’s as if someone just turned up the temperature of the room by about 10 or 15 degrees. My forehead sweats, my face flushes, and I am immediately irritated with whoever turned up the heat. Then I realize it is me. Here’s one of the weird things, the insides of my elbows start to sweat. That’s just… weird. But it’s how I know it is a hot flash and not someone messing with the thermostat. This is the first time in my life I remember noticing the inside of my elbows.

And Then There is the Weight Gain

On the upside, I bet I could rock this look.

So, combine hormones gone wild with COVID and guess who managed to gain 12 pounds in 4 months? This is not the plan that I had for this year. Or at least I was hoping it would be 12 pounds of muscle from weightlifting. But, I put it in on 4 months, I am going to spend the next 4 months getting it back off.

How? The same way I tell other people to lose weight. Focus on diet primarily. Get some movement in, but make that secondary. You can only really focus on one big goal at a time. Trying to do too much just causes a blowout. Keep your mind on the “why” and set your sights on the goal.

And what is the goal? Well as my hormones have started reminding me, I am not getting any younger. What are my goals? How do I want to age? What do I want in my life as I get older? Personally, one of my goals is mobility and strength into my old age. I want to be a Master’s athlete well into my 70s. If that is the case, I need to focus on it now. While it is always possible to get in shape, the best time to start is today.

I am also planning on spending time researching hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. It’s one of the things I do for a clients, research and learn about health and wellness topics and write about them. It is time I take on myself as a client.
