I am updating my site with some new photos. Back in June I took a risk and treated myself to a brand new look.
I had been thinking about getting my hair cut for quite awhile, but it had been on the back burner. There was a look I knew I wanted to try, but… something always stopped me.
Then I took a workshop with Julie Otte of The Alignment Principle. (If you are in the GR area and get a chance to take a workshop with her – DO IT!) In her workshop she talked about why people feel “stuck” in their lives. One of the things that holds us back is fear – fear of what other people will think, fear of the unknown, fear of failure, even fear of success. We don’t always know it is happening, but fear is keeping us from trying things and taking risks – even things that really aren’t that big of a deal, like taking a new job or moving into a new apartment, or cutting your hair off.
It hit me while she was talking – without really thinking about it, fear was what was keeping me from cutting my hair. My hair had been long – anywhere from shoulder to waist length – since my sophomore year of high school. For nearly 30 years, I’ve worn the same style, more or less. I decided right then and there fear won’t rule me.
It was time for a change.
There is this weird myth I remember hearing about back in my early teens – that men only like long hair. I am not sure where that came from or who said it to me, but I distinctly remember hearing it. However, when I talked to my boyfriend about it, his reaction was, “That sounds so cool! Do it!” In fact, his excitement encouraged me to move my hair appointment up by several weeks!
My hairstylist is Mel over at Tonic Salon. (Again, if you are in the Grand Rapids area, I also highly recommend her.) Mel checked in with me a few times to make sure that this risk was really what I wanted, and when she saw it was, rocked out the new look!
And I love it! I get more compliments on my hair than anything I have ever done. People of all ages, colors, representations – random folks in the grocery story and people I have known all my life, stop to tell me they love my hair.
Of course the new look prompted all new headshots from Mod Bettie. I just got them in recently, so I am slowly updating this site. Once again I need to give a shoutout to a Grand Rapids company – Mod Bettie is fantastic!
Here’s the point though –
I thought about cutting my hair for years. And it’s a big change, there is no doubt. But there has been absolutely no backlash from my risk taking. Oh, there are a few people who probably don’t approve, but no one has come right out and said anything nasty. On the contrary, I get nothing but compliments. In fact, I would say that at least once a day someone says something enthusiastic about my look.
So what about you? What scares you? Is there something you have always wanted to do, but don’t quite have the guts? Please, let me encourage you to take that leap. Happiness and life fulfillment come from taking risks and following our hearts.
