Today I tackled a forsythia bush.

In fact, it is hardly a bush anymore. It’s far too overgrown to be a bush. It’s more like a tree – with only the top sticking out of the ground. Hint – forsythia should not be this big. So, why is mine? Because I neglected the thing. See, it is up at my cabin and when I am here… yardwork isn’t really on my mind. I used to keep it fairly well pruned, but lately, it is had grown way out of proportion. I mean, it’s huge.

And the problem with it is that it is right near the entrance to the cabin. So every time I come in or out, there are whippy tree branches in my way. This time, I walked smack into a fairly large one when carrying in my coolers full of food. I decided it was time to do something about it.

I realized that one of the reasons I hadn’t done anything about it was that once it got out of control, I wasn’t sure what the “best” way was to deal with it. I mean, we are way past a pair of pruning shears here. But I have a couple of bow saws, some rudimentary knowledge of how to prune branches and how to use a hand saw, so, this afternoon, I just dove in. I guarantee I didn’t do it right. Considering how little I know, it is pretty much impossible that an arborist wouldn’t have shaken their head with pain at my butchery. It was probably the wrong time of year, I probably should have been more concerned about the angle of the cuts, I should have never let it get to this big old mess in the first place, and so on. But you know what? I did what I know how to do to the best of my ability and it looks 100% better. I am also highly unlikely to smack my head on tree branch coming in or out of the cabin. So, I call it a success.

Why do I bring this up? Because I feel like with the age of the internet that we are in, we are afraid to do things badly. Or even at all. I didn’t take any photos of that bush, it won’t be on Instagram, but still, I had this “what if someone judges me?” mentality. I suppose I could have called someone in, but the cabin is kind of in the middle of nowhere, and I wanted this done now. So, I just jumped in and winged it.

I bring this up because I feel like fitness is like that forsythia. We’re under this impression that there is one “right” way to do things. Now that I am a nutrition coach, I certainly have my opinions on how people should get healthy. But if you don’t have the time or money or whatever to hire a coach, that is okay! Just jump in there. I am sure you have some fundamental knowledge of what is healthy food. I am also sure you have a few ideas about things you do regularly now that could be a little healthier. Start there! Replace a calorie beverage with water. Eat a piece of fruit. Just jump in and get started. There will be time to refine things later, but don’t wait for the “perfect” diet to come along to make changes. Making progress towards good is better than waiting forever for perfect.
