The Essentials of Sport and Nutrition Certification Course

It’s GRLife announcement time!

Precision Nutrition coursebook

I have decided to take a certification course in Sport and Nutrition. If you have been reading my blog here at GRLife, you know that I am completely fascinated by nutrition and its effect on the body. Because of that, I decided to take my education to another level.

I looked at a number of courses before deciding on Precision Nutrition. What I liked about them was they offered to send you the first chapter of their course book in advance so you could see what they were all about. They also offered to let you watch some course videos in advance. The more I read and watched, the more I respected their position on nutrition. They are wonderfully open-minded. One of their strongest tenants is that there is no one “perfect diet.” (A sentiment I recently read again in Daniel Lieberman’s The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health, and Disease. Talk about a fascinating book!) Because we as humans are all so very different, down to the genetic level, our own diets have to be different. With all my reading and researching about the human genome, that makes perfect sense to me.

Good News! You get to learn with me!

Obviously, I am not going to repeat the coursework here, but there have been some fascinating concepts in their program already – and I am only a few chapters in! I believe one of the best ways to really learn something is to teach it to someone else, so I plan on sharing my thoughts and ideas as I work through the program. For example, one that really got me thinking was that good nutrition is good for the planet. And the way they talk about it is not what you might think, (hint: it’s not about organic farming.) There will be a blog coming out on that soon because the more I think about it, the more it blows my mind.

One of the things I love is that I am seeing all kinds of concepts coming together from my various areas of study. For example, the first chapter in my coursework is about Cells. Naturally, that gets into DNA, and I found concepts I had read in Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters coming up in that chapter. As I mentioned, I am currently reading Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health, and Disease and I am reading a chapter about how we evolved complicated gastrointestinal systems. The third chapter in my coursebook? It is about the gastrointestinal system. How cool is that?

What this means is that at the end of the course, I will have a Certificate in Nutritional Coaching. I plan on being my own client. As I learn and change my own diet, naturally, I’ll tell you all about it on here on GRLife blog.
